TELCO › OVERVIEW

Next-generation broadband, call it Extreme Broadband for a moment, is already leading an evolution in communications that will soon eclipse the development of the telephone itself. It might be a strong and debatable statement, but no one will deny the possibility. The telephone gave us the ability to simultaneously transmit audio between two or more parties, in real time, over long distances. Extreme Broadband has the ability to simultaneously transmit audio, video, images and data between multiple participants, in real time, over long distances. Multi-sensory, multi-party, multi-media conversations will change the way we live, work, transact and learn.

Vying for a bigger share, service providers are poised to grow their networks to provide consumers with high-end services such as High Speed Internet, VoIP, Video On Demand (VoD), Interactive TV, Net Gaming etc over a single broadband connection using DSL, Cable Modem, wireless and other advanced technologies.

A convergent experience is more than just bundling voice, data, video, and content or offering multiple payment options. A convergent experience is a new category of value that is more than the sum of its parts. The industry needs to create a new experience for customers that leverages all of the network, device, and billing enablers that are in place. Because of such requirements, the need for sophisticated broadband service provisioning, activation and billing systems is ever increasing. The challenge of system integrators today is to integrate all devices, applications, network and services to create an effective Operation and Business support systems (OSS/BSS).

Further, wireless network operators, service providers and equipment vendors are faced with major decisions on the choice of wireless technology and the potential commercial impact of the following emerging technologies and standards:

  • 3G cellular variants including W-CDMA FDD, EDGE, cdma2000 1x, TD-SCDMA, WCDMA TDD, and future enhancements such as HSDPA, cdma2000 1x EV/DO and EV-DV
  • new fixed and mobile broadband wireless access standards, including IEEE 802.16a (WiMAX) and IEEE 802.20,
  • wireless LAN access standards such as IEEE 802.11b and 802.11g and short-range standards such as Bluetooth and Ultra Wide Band (UWB)

It will never be a case of one technology becoming universal, or one technology replacing another. All of the wireless networks will get built out for different usage, with some overlap at the edges. But most importantly, the technologies will co-exist, creating more robust solutions that will enable a lot of new and exciting possibilities.

Network Management Systems (NMS) will come to their own as businesses moves into a 24x7 mode and uptime becomes crucial. CEOs and CFOs are increasingly demanding information on the nature of network traffic from network managers and CIOs. Many organizations are also considering remote management, through the Internet or through an external managed service provider, to manage complex network infrastructure.

Software security segment gained significant momentum as more and more networks and applications are opened for access to users. Security tools include anti virus software, secure infrastructure, dedicated hardware and software tools for intrusion detection and firewall, virtual private networks (VPN), identity services, encryption and enterprise security management. The solutions must ensure integrity of network, applications, databases and operating systems. Both hardware and software vendors are contributing to meet the challenges of network and enterprise security.

Going forward, the most profitable equipment vendors, service providers, high end software product companies and system integrators will shift to a marketing-centric view that emphasizes value creation by leveraging the opportunities to build sustainable, profitable and competitive advantage.

The challenge will be – product innovation, time to market, optimize costs and increase market penetration.

The Telecoms line of business of Cambridge Solutions is focused to help its clients to meet the above challenges.
